Expressive art therapies are defined as the use of art, music, drama, dance/movement, poetry/creative writing, bibliotherapy, play, and sand play within the context of psychotherapy, counseling, rehabilitation, or medicine. Additionally, expressive therapies are sometimes referred to as “integrative” when various arts are purposely used in combination in treatment.
Expressive art therapies are predicted on the assumption that people can heal through use of imagination and the various forms of creative expression.
Individual approaches to creative arts therapy are defined as follows:
- Art therapy
- Music therapy
- Drama therapy
- Dance/movement therapy
- Poetry therapy and writing therapy
- Horticultural therapy is often not listed with other expressive therapies; it is not universally considered a form of expressive therapy or creative arts therapy
