India now has it’s 14th President as Mr. Ram Nath Kovind. He’s the second Dalit leader after K. R. Narayanan, and the first politician to become the Head of State and Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Armed Forces linked to the Rashtriya Swayamsevek Singh (RSS).
He’s also the first leader to occupy the highest constitutional position in the country from Uttar Pradesh.
Kovind was a lawyer by profession, who practiced in the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court for over 16yrs. He joined BJP in 1991. He was elected as a Rajya Sabha member from Uttar Pradesh in 1994, and served for two consecutive terms for 12yrs till March 2006.
He made India proud in October, 2002, by representing the country in the United Nations in New York and addressed United Nations General Assembly.
Mr. Kovind is known for his struggles and good deeds. As an advocate, he used to provide free legal aid to SC/ST women, and poor and needy girls under the aegis of the Free Legal Aid Society in Delhi. He has also served as a member on the board of management of the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University, Lucknow.
Now, all we need to do is wait and watch. Whether the choice made will prove to be the ultimate weapon for Modi Sarkar or a wrong move. It is said the choice was made to secure the Dalit votes in the coming election, but after knowing about Mr. Kovind it seems like he’ll prove to be one of the best we have.
